PHUKET: Phuket is enjoying record numbers of foreign tourists in 2011, according to official statistics.
The number of international passengers arriving at Phuket Airport January through March totaled 654,009, up 25.1% over the same period in 2010, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
This included a growth of 31.3% (228,76 in January, 24.3% (231,326) in February and 21.6% (193,915) in March.
From April 1 through 23 April, international passengers arriving at the airport totaled 123,934, up almost 31% over the same period last year.
The Immigration Bureau reported 1,692,598 international passengers arriving at Phuket Airport in 2010 up 42.7% over 2009, said the TAT.
The announcement followed a TAT “familiarization trip” that saw members of the Bangkok press and tour agents treated to a four-day excursion to sample TAT award-winning tourism products on the island.
Meanwhile, Airports of Thailand (AoT) has announced that the first phase of its expansion project at Phuket Airport is expected to be finished in September, just in time for the next tourism high season.
AoT Board of Directors chairman Tirapol Noparumpaat led a meeting of the AoT board at the Sea Pearl Villas Resort in Kathu following an inspection tour of the airport yesterday.
All of the improvements underway are geared at facilitating passenger movement through the airport.
These include increased seating capacity in the departure lounges, improvements in the baggage collection system, better security including installation of more CCTV cameras and improved detection capability at the passenger walk-through gate.
The plan also includes some rare good news for smokers: there will be an upgrade of the smoking room in the international departure lounge.
Passenger traffic at the airport in fiscal 2010 (October 2009 through September 2010) increased 13.9% over the previous year, while flight traffic was up 18.9% over the same period, according to AoT figures.
The airport currently has 36 airlines using the facility, including five charter carriers.
Phuket Airport now has flight services to 60 destinations in 23 different countries, according to AoT.

| 115th Argentine Polo Open, Buenos Aires |
|
|
|
|
I just came back from Argentina and the 115th Argentine Open polo competition. Our team, Jumeirah Culu Culu played solidly but were outgunned and a bit unlucky making the quarter finals. Rain delayed play, somewhat unusually, however delightful spring weather prevailed and it was a thrilling and successful Open this year. A marked number of corporate sponsors were present and the VIP areas were more expensively dressed up than ever before.
Argentina is buzzing, with strong tourism numbers despite global problems. Judging from the inability of getting a decent dining table across the city until about 12pm it appears November tourism numbers will again be at record highs, finishing an unbelievably strong year. Tourism from with Latin America is the key driver and everyting represents cut price value vs particularly Brazils Real.
The country collapsed in 2001 and is continuing its recovery, with solid asset appreciation, International demand for quality properties and a fairly insatiable demand for new luxury apartments that are being treated as bank deposits. There remains no leverage in the system, no local property mortgage market and resultingly still strong asset price upside. Argentina property will remain a strong buy in 2009 and 2010.
115th Movistar Argentine Open Championship
The final of the most important polo championship in the world was disputed last Saturday with the participation of Ellerstina which played and overcame La Dolfina by 13-12. Two of the highest handicap teams and the classic game of the decade.
The former, after having lost against the latter in 2005 and 2007, could take revenge and win in the same way as it had lost in the opportunities mentioned : in the supplementary chukker the final score was 13-12 with a golden goal scored by Gonzalito Pieres .
Progression Ellerstina : 0-1, 3-2, 4-3, 7-4, 9-8, 11-10, 12-12 y 13-12.
Final teams :
Ellerstina: Facundo Pieres 10, Gonzalo Pieres (h) 10, Pablo Mac Donough 10 and Juan M. Nero 9. Total 39.
La Dolfina : Adolfo Cambiaso 10, Lucas Monteverde 10, Mariano Aguerre 10 and Bartolomé Castagnola 10. Total 40.
Judges: Daniel Boudou and Matías Baibiene.
Arbiter: Augusto Gómez Romero.
The Match
Ellerstina is a dignified and well deserved champion due to its hard work and concentration of its four participants who struggled tremendously in all the corners of the field. An efficient match for the winner, although not very showy for the audience.
Ellerstina did not allow its opponent to use its very successful strategy. World number one player Adolfo Cambiaso was continually marked and neutralized and all his plays hampered, therefore his team was rather lost.
This time, the champions tactic was to keep the game tight and relay off its players in tandem, typically a strategy of its rivals.
Though J. M. Nero got the prize for the best player, all his companions would have deserved it.
La Dolfina`s mistake was to rely on reaching the goals through Cambiaso`s virtuosity but this time it had, as a result, only 2 field goals. Cambiaso was excellently marked by Ellerstina. Last season and in some matches of this one, we congratulated this team for reaching this wisdom, this maturity.
In conclusion, we can just repeat our first words: Ellerstina has earned its title and is a dignified winner of the Argentine Open Championship , a team of 40 goals in the Argentine Polo.
Special prizes
For the best final player: Juan Martin Nero .
Goal scorer of the championship: Adolfo Cambiaso with 34 goals.
Equine fomentation prize for the best mounted final player: Adolfo Cambiaso .
Gonzalo Tanoira prize for the best mounted player in the championship: Adolfo Cambiaso .
Susan Townley Cup for the best final example: "Habanna" , "Evander`s" daughter (Comedy Star) and `"Eva", Ellerstina S.A.`s property played by J. M. Nero.
AACCP prize for the best Polo Argentine pure pedigree product of the final: "Dolfina Toro" , "Spotivo" (Lode) and Julia`s son, bred by Adolfo Cambiaso and Bartolomh Castagnola`s property.

Indios Chapaleufú II Culú Culú
Sweet hopes
With the decision to stay in the country while the polo season in England and Spain is in full swing, Juan Ignacio Merlos, the new addition to Indios Chapaleufú II Culú Culú and a four time champion, is awaiting his debut here in Argentina.
"Apart from playing, Eduardo, Alberto and Ignacio are in England contacting players to see the possibility of adding them to the team as alternates. In the coming days, it is possible that I will travel to Europe to learn of the latest developments, "said the brand new number three.
In addition, his return to the Argentine courts will occur in the next season for the Open Jockey Club, along with the three Heguy brothers. "It is going to take a little time to get use to," he said.
In terms of preparing the team for the high handicap season, Pite noted that "Palermo will be important, although we will have the horses ready to play from the beginning of Tortugas, the first tournament of the year."
La Espadaña Culú Culú Cup
Bitter taste
A few days ago, nine teams with 14-16 goal handicap took part in a new edition of the traditional cup La Espadaña Culú Culú on the courts that the club organizer has in the town of Lobos.
In their debut, Jockey Club Culú Culú Amun-Trips (Miguel Uriburu -1 -; Ezekiel Dupont -6 -; Pablo Bagnardi -5 - and Jerome Fanelli -5) lost to The Watchtower MPI 9-6, and in the second match, they also fell to St. Mary 360, 7-6.
The tournament was won by St. Mary 360, who in the end defeated LE The Tapera The Caburé by 13-10. |

David Lampson, from Boston, and Maria Faccioti, of Argentina, tango at Salón Canning.
The tango dancers took their places inside a cramped apartment in downtown Buenos Aires, as David Lampson, a 29-year-old television writer from Boston, wiped his brow. Despite the 100-degree weather, the fans had been shut off, spotlights switched on and windows blacked out with trash bags. The cameraman waited until the smoke machine blurred the parquet floor before yelling “Action!” Then just as the iTunes track reached its dramatic crescendo, the fuse blew. For the fourth time.
“Let’s unplug the other fan and try again,” Mr. Lampson told the polyglot cast and crew, which included a Greek mother, a Colombian architect and an Argentine shoemaker. Also present was a New York City film student, who was editing the footage for YouTube distribution. Mr. Lampson likened the process to creating art from garbage. “There is a tango dance based on this idea,” he added, “called cambalache.”
A better term might be bohemians-in-exile. A new kind of tango is taking shape along the crooked back streets of Buenos Aires. At a former furniture factory on Calle Honduras, the British music engineer Tom Rixton, who has worked with top acts like Depeche Mode, runs a stylish boutique hotel called Home with his Argentine wife. Nearby on Calle Garruchaga, Amanda Knauer, a fashion designer from Manhattan, sells a chic line of leather handbags at Qara. And at Zizek, a weekly dance party run by an expat from San Antonio, the cha-ch-ch-cha rhythms of cumbia folk music quivers to an electronic beat.
“There are expats everywhere tapping into the city’s thriving cultural and arts scene,” said Grant C. Dull, Zizek’s founder, who also runs the popular bilingual Web guide www.WhatsUpBuenosAires.com “And it’s not backpacker types, but people with money and contacts.” (click link below for more information)
